After working to reopen county roads from storm debris this week, our Road and Bridge crew started assisting Burrton today with cleanup throughout their city. Really proud of our team for their great attitudes and eagerness to keep helping after a busy week. They've also committed to aiding Halstead over the coming weeks.

It's been a strenuous and challenging week across our county, but we've seen so many stories of friends, residents, volunteers and communities going well out of their way to help each other out. It's really something special, and something to be proud of. Thank you to everyone for your patience, understanding and resilient spirits as our communities overcome adversity.Photos from Harvey County Government's post

Harvey County Parks

The lake at East Park remains under a harmful algal bloom warning, which means a bloom is present or expected. The park is open, but swim beach areas are closed, and motorized boating is not allowed.

The warning only includes the lake at East Park. West Park and Camp Hawk are open to all regular activities.

Please follow these recommendations if you visit East Park:

▪️ Avoid all contact with lake water
▪️ Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful
▪️ Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water
▪️ Swimming, skiing, jet skiing and wading are not allowed
▪️ Motorized boating is not allowed
▪️ Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are allowed
▪️ If fish are caught for consumption, clean well with potable water and eat only the fillet portion.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment uses three categories to classify harmful algal bloom notices: watch, warning and hazard. When there is a change in status, we will share that here and on our website.

An update from Harvey County Emergency Management on continuing storm damage recovery work from the May 19 severe weather event:

Through the first three days of cleanup, the Harvey County Solid Waste Department has taken in 151 tons of tree debris from 202 truckloads.

Debris cleaning continues throughout the county. Many municipalities have announced their respective programs to aid residents in picking up and hauling damaged brush and limbs. Solid Waste remains open during regular hours for residents that choose to bring loads of brush directly to the facility.

All County-maintained roadways closed due to storm damage have since reopened. Harvey County Road and Bridge will be lending equipment and staff support to the cities of Burrton and Halstead over the coming weeks to assist their clean-up efforts.

Residents that sustained significant property damage or are in need of clean-up supplies can request assistance through the American Red Cross. Please call 1-800-redcross (1-800-733-2767).

The Harvey County Appraiser's Office continues damage assessments in Newton, Halstead and Burrton. Residents that had their property damaged in the May 19 storms in other areas, especially rural, northern and eastern parts of the county, are encouraged to contact the Appraiser's Office. The data gathered from damage assessments can help determine if the county is eligible for state aid and resources. Residents can contact the Appraiser's Office at 316-284-6820.

Harvey County Parks staff have cleared debris from all three County-owned parks. The power has been restored at West Park, and the bait shop restocked. The bait shops at West Park and East Park will operate their regularly scheduled hours through the holiday weekend.

The Harvey County Health Department was closed Monday and Tuesday due to power outage, and provided limited services Wednesday, but was able to resume normal operations today. Residents seeking appointments and services can contact the Health Department at 316-283-1637.

As of today, Evergy reports nearly all customers have had their power restored in the county. You can view Evergy's outage map or report an outage here: outagemap.evergy.com/

We postponed this week's #maxmondaysinmay post to today. Monday, and much of this week, has been a rough one for many in the communities we serve. Hopefully a moment of K-9 Max can bring a smile of reprieve, so the first pic is Max upset with Deputy Skyler Hinton for interrupting his episode of Scooby Doo.

Actually, that picture is Max in the hotel while he was out of town doing certifications. Hinton and Max certify through the Heart of America Police Dog Association, which includes Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. They certify each October. Max is certified in narcotics, including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, MDMA and fentanyl. He is also certified in patrol work, including obedience, tracking, article and evidence searches, building and area searches and apprehension. Hinton and Max placed second in patrol certification!

Hinton and Max regularly train all year to keep their skills sharp and updated on best practices. They train a minimum of 16 hours each month, and typically do more than that, but still make plenty of time for relaxation.

Thanks for checking out our belated #maxmondaysinmay post, aka our first #maxmondaysinmayonathursday post. You can follow Max's everyday adventures at K-9 Max.Photos from Harvey County Sheriff's Office's post

Sunday night's storms made a dent on our three parks, but we've worked hard to clear debris the past two days to get the grounds ready for camping, fishing, hiking and more. Always proud of our staff here for being up to the challenge as we get ready to welcome visitors for the Memorial Day weekend.

The power has been restored at West Park. The bait shop has been restocked and will be ready for customers through the holiday weekend, as will the East Park bait shop.

At this time, the lake at East Park remains under a harmful algal bloom warning. If that status changes heading into the weekend, we will update here and on our website. Until then, please continue to follow precautions if you visit East Park (Camp Hawk and West Park are not affected): www.kdhe.ks.gov/777/Harmful-Algal-BloomsSunday night's storms made a dent on our three parks, but we've worked hard to clear debris the past two days to get the grounds ready for camping, fishing, hiking and more. STORM UPDATE: Thank you for your patience as we continue the recovery from Sunday night’s storm. City crews have been busy clearing major tree damage in parks and cemeteries, and clearing trees from streets as Evergy removes downed lines.

We have already begun some limb pickups along the snow route. Beginning Wednesday morning, we are bringing in our tree contractor, Alfred's Tree Service, to pick up in Area 1, and City staff will begin in Area 2. We understand not everyone will have their limbs ready, especially those whose trees are involved in power lines. Once we have completed one pass through the city, we will re-evaluate the situation and make additional pickups as needed.

Please pile your limbs as well as you can at the curb. City collection trucks can pick up tree pieces no larger than 10 feet long and three feet wide. Alfred's equipment can handle a bit bigger pieces, but your limbs are most likely to get picked up if you cut them to that size. If you leave limbs larger than that, they may be left behind, but don’t panic, we will work with you to get them removed.

It’s been a rough couple of days with Mother Nature for our county - thank you to everyone for your continued patience with everything - but now we’ve added sinkhole to the list.

This is on North Osage Road, north of Northeast 72nd Street. It’s a Walton Township road on the northeastern border of Harvey County. The road will remain open with barricades around the sinkhole, but we’ll continue to monitor to see if it expands. A Tuesday update from Harvey County Emergency Management on storm damage and recovery efforts from Sunday's severe weather event:

Damage assessments have begun in Harvey County as cleanup continues. The Harvey County Appraiser's Office has begun assessing damage in Halstead and Burrton. Data will be collected over the next several days. The information allows us to submit reports to the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to determine if the county meets monetary thresholds to qualify for various aid and reimbursements.

The American Red Cross is also compiling damage assessments. The Red Cross has distributed clean-up and other supplies in the area. If residents need clean-up supplies, or have had significant damage to their home, contact the Red Cross at 1-800-redcross (1-800-733-2767).

Residents in unincorporated parts of the county can contact the Harvey County Planning, Zoning and Environmental Department for guidance on permitting for construction. Residents planning repairs that live in the floodplain should also contact the office. Permits are required for all structures. However, roofing and siding replacements do not require a permit. Residents within city limits should contact their respective city office for direction.

Some residents and businesses remain without power in Harvey County. As of 4 p.m., Evergy reported 1,544 customers remain affected by outages in the county. You can view updates from Evergy here: outagemap.evergy.com

The Harvey County Health Department remained closed Tuesday due to the power outage. It will attempt to reopen Wednesday at 8 a.m. All Harvey County Parks are open to visitors, but West Park remains without power. The West Park bait shop is closed until power is restored.

Some roadways remain closed due to downed power lines and debris. Closed roads include, but may not be limited to:

▪️ North River Park Road from West First Street to Northwest 12th Street
▪️ South Anderson Road from Southwest 36th Street to Southwest 60th Street
▪️ Southwest 14th Street from Cow Palace Road to South Plum Street
▪️ Southwest 24th Street from South Hoover Road to South West Road
▪️ Southwest 84th Street from South Sand Hill Road to South Prairie Lake Road.

The Harvey County Commission unanimously voted today to approve a local disaster emergency declaration, formalizing a verbal declaration issued this past Sunday.
