A reminder that the lake at East Park remains under a harmful algal bloom warning, meaning an HAB is present or expected. The park is open, but swim beach areas are closed and motorized boating is not allowed.
Please follow these recommendations if you visit East Park:
▪️ Avoid all contact with lake water
▪️ Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful
▪️ Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water
▪️ Swimming, skiing, jet skiing and wading are not allowed
▪️ Motorized boating is not allowed
▪️ Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are allowed
▪️ If fish are caught for consumption, clean well with potable water and eat only the fillet portion.
The HAB warning only includes the lake at East Park. West Park and Camp Hawk are open to all regular activities.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment uses three categories to classify harmful algal bloom notices: watch, warning and hazard. If there is a change in status, we will share that information here and on our website.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including financial, physical, emotional or neglect - and in some cases, may be a combination. Signs of it may not always be visible. Older adults may begin to have behavior changes, become isolated or have changes in finances.
Nationally, only one in 24 cases of elder abuse is reported, according to research from the National Center on Elder Abuse. Help is available. If you are experiencing abuse, or know someone that may be, contact 911. Caregivers facing stress from taking care of a loved one have many services and resources available to you. To learn more, contact the Harvey County Department on Aging at 316-284-6880.

Agriculture is part of our county's backbone. There's plenty of combines, grain trucks, tractors and other heavy equipment coming in-and-out of the fields and onto rural roads this time of year. These babies do 0-to-60 mph in five days, not five seconds. They're not movin' any faster no matter how much you honk or tailgate.

Heat indices are expected to be over 100 degrees today in Harvey County. If you must be out, remember to apply sunscreen every two hours, stay hydrated, do not leave children or pets in a locked car (even with the AC running) and check in on your co-workers and neighbors. Great news!Ecstatic to share the Harvey County Breastfeeding Coalition received new grant funds through the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition! This grant will help us continue to envision opportunities to expand support for breastfeeding in our communities and child care settings.
The Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition has been a tremendous partner for Harvey County for several years, helping us identify dedicated, welcoming spaces for breastfeeding in our communities and encouraging supportive workplace policies. We're thankful to be a recipient of this funding, and excited to get to work broadening our local impact!
Yesterday, 4 of our staff participated in a state COMMEX (Communications Exercise) in Wichita along with over 30 other communications personnel from across Kansas. The day-long exercise provided opportunity to work with others and in different command vehicles (Wichita Fire, Harvey County Communications and Ford County Communications) working a large Wildfire scenario using Incident Command System protocols and forms.Photos from Harvey County Communications's post
