Harvey County Parks

A reminder that the lake at East Park remains under a harmful algal bloom warning, which means a harmful algal bloom is present or expected. East Park remains open, but swim beach areas are closed, and motorized boating is not allowed.

Please follow these recommendations if you visit East Park:

▪️ Avoid all contact with lake water
▪️ Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful
▪️ Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water
▪️ Swimming, skiing, jet skiing and wading are not allowed
▪️ Motorized boating is not allowed
▪️ Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are allowed
▪️ If fish are caught for consumption, clean well with potable water and eat only the fillet portion.

The warning only includes the lake at East Park. Other areas of the park remain open and accessible. West Park and Camp Hawk are open to all regular activities.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment uses three categories to classify harmful algal bloom notices: watch, warning and hazard. When there is a change in status, we will share that information here and on our website.

Its back...TOMORROW - Saturday, April 27. Bring those unused and expired medications and dump them properly! NO SHARPS ACCEPTED.

Sheriff Chad Gay casually mentioned that Saturday will mark 30 years for him as a law enforcement officer. Of course, we needed a picture for comparison, so we used our sources to find this one from his early days with the Newton Police Department to now. Is today the last day Chad allows us to use the Facebook page? Maybe! If so, it's been fun 😅.

What else was going on in 1994? Forrest Gump and The Lion King were leading the box office, Amazon was founded, smartphones began to be sold, and fittingly, Seinfeld was the top TV show (Chad may say a "serenity now" or two after this post).

Reminder that this is coming up this Saturday. Free, easy way to dispose of any old or unneeded medications.

A road sealing program is scheduled to begin May 1 to resurface two roads. North Meridian Road between West Broadway Street and North Hesston Road will be resurfaced. That's northwest of Newton. Northeast 60th Street between K-15 Highway and U.S. Highway 50 will also be resurfaced, which is west of Walton.

Both roadways will remain open to traffic while the work is underway. Traffic will be controlled and directed by flaggers and pilot car. Residents will continue to have access to their properties throughout.

The sealing program will be completed by Vance Brothers. The projects are anticipated to be done in 10 days, contingent on weather. The Sheriff's Office and other agencies will be participating in a training exercise throughout the day near Walton. Please expect that you may see an increased law enforcement presence in the area, and at times may hear loud noises.
