Resurfacing will start soon on K-15 in Harvey County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project – involving a chip seal – will be on K-15 from the south city limits of North Newton north to the Harvey/Marion county line. The length is 7.4 miles.
The work is expected to start around Monday, June 10, and be completed around Friday, June 21. During the work, traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot car, and motorists should be prepared to stop and expect delays of up to 15 minutes. The map below shows the approximate project location, marked in red.

Circle C Paving and Construction, of Goddard, is the primary contractor for the $358,066 project. For updated information on this and other KDOT highway projects and road conditions across the state, go to www.kandrive.gov.

Check it out! June 4 and June 25 theyll be in Harvey County! Also, SNAP and Double Up Bucks accepted.

Beginning Tuesday, May 28th, the Newton Et Cetera Shop is offering a "Free Room" for individuals and families struggling to make ends meet.

Guidelines are:
1. Only take what you need. This is to ensure that all those in need have an opportunity.
2. NO RESELLERS!
3. Items will be specially marked and placed in their own room, and only those items will be offered free.
4. Items must be taken to the clerk so we can track the amount of items we are giving out.

The Newton Et Cetera Shop does this in an effort to provide for those in the community who truly need the assistance, to reduce recycling and waste in our landfills, and to be of service to our local communities.

It's the last Monday in May, which means it's time to wrap up our #maxmondaysinmay posts. K-9 Max and Deputy Hinton have an outstanding support system, so let's introduce you to a few of Max's crime-fighting friends.

First, there's K-9 Ziva, who works with Lt. Thompson on the Newton Police Department. Ziva is a narcotics K-9 who does article and evidence searches. She's a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois from Hungary. She's worked with Thompson for four years. Then there's K-9 Kilo, partnered with Officer Sontag on the NPD. Kilo is a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois from the Netherlands, and with Sontag for two years. Kilo is dual purpose, certified for narcotics detection and patrol work (like Max).

Ziva, Kilo and Max routinely train together, and help each other on calls as needed. Thompson, Sontag and Hinton also step up to take care of each other's dogs during vacations or other events. Max is happy to have the support, from his K-9 peers to everyone he gets to meet across the county, and most of all, his partner Deputy Hinton.

We appreciate you following along as we've gotten to share a little about K-9 Max's work and life for #maxmondaysinmay. Max is a tremendous asset to our team, and just a joyful big ol' pupper to see around the office. You can follow Max's everyday adventures at K-9 Max!Photos from Harvey County Sheriff's Office's post

Harvey County is included in a tornado watch through 11 p.m. Please stay aware of the weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening.

Harvey County is once again in line for potentially severe storms this weekend. Beginning around 6pm tonight (Saturday) we could see heavy rains, 75mph winds, hail up to baseball size and a tornado can not be ruled out. The storms should remain west of I-135 and track east over the evening.

If you have outdoor plans for this holiday weekend, make sure you know where the nearest shelter is located and have a backup location just in case. If you are traveling make plans to stop during the storms and find a safe place to rest and refuel.

Be weather ready by listening to your NOAA weather radio, receiving alerts on your cellphone through Everbridge or your favorite TV/Radio media alerts.Photos from Harvey County Emergency Management's post

The lake at East Park remains under a harmful algal bloom warning, which means a bloom is present or expected. The park is open, but swim beach areas are closed, and motorized boating is not allowed.

The warning only includes the lake at East Park. West Park and Camp Hawk are open to all regular activities.

Please follow these recommendations if you visit East Park:

▪️ Avoid all contact with lake water
▪️ Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful
▪️ Do not let pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water
▪️ Swimming, skiing, jet skiing and wading are not allowed
▪️ Motorized boating is not allowed
▪️ Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are allowed
▪️ If fish are caught for consumption, clean well with potable water and eat only the fillet portion.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment uses three categories to classify harmful algal bloom notices: watch, warning and hazard. When there is a change in status, we will share that here and on our website.
