The Harvey County Commission adopted a 2024 budget at its Sept. 12 meeting that is projected to slightly decrease the mill levy from the 2023 budget.

The Commission passed a budget with an estimated 43.487 mill levy. The mill levy in 2023 was 43.604.

The adopted 2024 budget is also a 1.117 mill decrease from the previously published recommended budget for the fiscal year.

Here is how the estimated 2024 mill levy compares to previous years:

  • 2024: 43.487 (estimated)
  • 2023: 43.604
  • 2022: 42.629
  • 2021: 42.649
  • 2020: 42.356

The adopted 2024 budget maintained several project advancements, such as:

  • Rehabbing up to 23 miles of roadway pavement (about $2.3 million) and replacing two bridge structures (about $570,000)
  • Strengthening the County's appropriation for municipal ambulance services to bolster EMS staffing levels
  • Updating body and vehicle camera equipment for Sheriff's Office deputies
  • Dedicating funding toward long-term maintenance projects at the Harvey County Detention Center.

Compiling the county budget is a months-long process that begins in earnest in February. Commissioners held department budget hearings in late May and into early June. The previously recommended budget was approved July 11. Revenue neutral and public budget hearings were conducted Aug. 22.
