💊 Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday at the Sheriff's Office.National Prescription Drug Take Back Day returns this Saturday! This past fall, just shy of 600,000 pounds of medications were properly disposed of across 4,675 drop-off sites across the country as part of the semiannual event.

You can bring prescriptions you no longer need to the Sheriff's Office, 120 E. Seventh St. in Newton, this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We'll take the medications free of charge, no questions asked (but no needles, please). This event helps ensure these medications are not lost, stolen or misused in our communities.

If you have some medications you've been meaning to discard, come by Saturday and we'll get them disposed of properly.

💊 Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday at the Sheriffs Office.

The Sheriff's Office and other agencies will be participating in a training exercise throughout the day near Walton. Please expect that you may see an increased law enforcement presence in the area, and at times may hear loud noises.

Please know this is simply training, and there is not reason for alarm. Thank you for your understanding.

Wishing all the best to Deb Stoddard as she begins retirement! Deb concluded a 19-year career with the Appraiser's Office today.

Deb was the welcoming greeter and compass for many courthouse visitors, whether they came to visit the office or needed help with directions on where to go. The Stoddards are tremendous public servants, as Deb's husband, Lloyd, also contributed more than two decades of service to our Parks Department.

We'll certainly miss Deb's wealth of knowledge, her warm, cheerful personality and her stopping by to check-in on the staff around the courthouse. The chair may also enter retirement, but we'll take good care of the photo albums. Enjoy retirement!Photos from Harvey County Government's post

Fire Marshal Misti Uhlman thank you for so many years of service and dedication. You will be greatly missed. After more than 16 years of service to the citizens of Harvey County, 11 of those being with Hesston Fire/EMS, Fire Marshal Misti Uhlman is resigning. Her last day will be April 26th.

Misti started first responding as an EMT with City of Sedgwick in 2008 and in 2009 got her EMT-I. Then in 2010 took Firefighter 1. Halstead Fire/EMS was her supporting agency as she went through Paramedic. Newton Fire/EMS was gracious to allow her to complete her field internship with them in 2011.

Misti first joined Hesston Fire/EMS in 2012 as a Firefighter and Paramedic. She gained her Firefighter 2 and Juvenile Fire setter Intervention Specialist in 2013. In 2014 she obtained her Fire Inspector 1. Then in 2015 went on to gain her Fire Investigator 1 and 2. Misti was a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators. In November of 2015 Misti transitioned to the role of Fire Marshal.

During her tenure Misti brought the Get Alarmed Kansas Program to Hesston. She helped install over 1000 smoke and CO alarms into hundreds of homes in Hesston. She also was an American Heart CPR instructor, certifying dozens of department and community members in CPR and First Aid. Misti also took an interest in the Fire/EMS reporting software, she helped the department transition to Image Trend Elite in 2017. In 2022 Misti became the treasurer for Harvey County Emergency Services Association.

Misti had this to say about her time with Hesston Fire/EMS. “I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to work with this community for over a decade. I have made incredible friendships not only within the department, but the community of Hesston and Harvey County as well. This department and community have helped me grow personally and professionally. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn many new skills and gain knowledge during my time here, I also learned a lot of valuable life skills along the way. I will continue to be a huge advocate for Fire/EMS and volunteerism. There are so many people that played a huge role in allowing me to get where I’m at today, thank you!”

Thank you for your many years of service!

Our Road and Bridge crew is replacing a structure on South Prairie Lake Road between Southwest 60th and 72nd streets in southwest Harvey County - with a little different approach.

This was an old timber culvert that was in rough shape. The crew cobbled together the necessary pieces to rebuild it in-house - some surplus decking here, materials around the shop over there, beams from a previously-closed bridge that we kept around for a rainy (or sunny) day. When completed, this will essentially be a rehabilitated steel structure.

We're proud of our Road and Bridge team for thinking outside the box to restore this structure. Not every bridge or culvert can be replaced this way, but this resourceful strategy is expected to provide several more years of use and value.Photos from Harvey County Government's post
