In 2011, volunteers submitted more than 76,000 hours of service to RSVP. Reflecting the state equivalent for volunteer time, $18.13/hour, this represents donated time valued at $1,130,390.96 in 2011. Additionally, several of the organizations and groups these volunteers assisted donated significant cash amounts to charity and back to the community. Volunteers also donated time to one on one visitations, house checks, transportation, meals on wheels, the Good Neighbor Nutrition Program, and grocery runs, which represents an invaluable contribution to those who, through this volunteered time, can continue to live independently, as well as a multitude of other activities in support of their community.
Volunteers may give their time to organizations of their choosing or select from a list of more than 400 service opportunities in the community, opting to learn new skills or selecting a niche they are already familiar with. Opportunities are numerous and also present benefits to the volunteers themselves. Studies of volunteerism show increased feelings of community and well-being, longer lives, and extended quality of life. RSVP volunteers also enjoy the benefits of free supplemental insurance, the possibility of mileage reimbursement within the county, and occasional special recognitions.
