Child Care Licensing

Provides assistance to parents and caregivers in selecting a day care

There are many excellent day care providers in Harvey County. While the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) in conjunction with local health departments seeks to assure that day cares are safe and healthy places for children, the regulations for providers are only minimum standards. Many other things go into making a good day care choice. This means parents have a large responsibility in selecting a day care they feel good about, can trust, is safe, and is the right fit for their child.

If you would like guidance in selecting a day care:

If you are ready to check out some day care providers, contact the Kansas Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies at 1-877-678-2548 or go to their website at http://www.kaccrra.org/ for a listing of providers in Harvey County.

If you have a concern, question, or complaint about a day care, whether you are a parent, grandparent, or a concerned citizen, contact Margaret Goering or Val Goerend at the Health Department.

Provides assistance to anyone seeking to become a day care provider

With the population growth in Harvey County and more parents going to work there is an ongoing need for quality day care services in Harvey County. The Health Department welcomes applications from individuals and organizations interested in opening a day care. If you are or are planning to provide childcare in either of the following situations, you must be licensed or registered with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE):

  • Anyone who cares for 1 or 2 children unrelated to the provider for more than a total of 20 child care hours per week away from the child’s own home;
  • Anyone who cares for 3 or more children, unrelated to the provider, away from the children's home, regardless of the number of hours per week.

Here are the steps to getting started in becoming a licensed or registered day care provider:

  1. Attend orientation classes. Classes are held at 9:00 am every second Wednesday of the month at the Health Department, 316 Oak in Newton. Please contact the Health Department if you plan to attend.
  2. Complete an application. Applications are available from the Health Department or online from KDHE at http://www.kdheks.gov/bcclr/forms.html
  3. Bring your completed application and KDHE application fee to the Harvey County Health Department.
  4. For Licensed Provider applications, an initial survey will be scheduled.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact Margaret Goering, or Valorie Goerend, or call them at the Health Department at 316-283-1637.
